Town Team - Background

In September 2020, around 20 people representing a wide range of stakeholders from private, public, and community sectors, got together to form a team.  The objective was to identify a project that we could all agree would benefit all parts of the community, and bring economic value to Bude Town Centre.

In April 2023, Bude Town Team was awarded £48K Town Vitality Funding from Cornwall Council, which enabled the team to tender and contract for consulting services to run a major consultation within Bude.

Feedback was gathered from across the wide community, including businesses and young people and this has resulted in a clear Vision driven by the Bude community, as to how they would like to see the town centre evolve over the next 10-20 years.

The output from this broad consultation – A Vision for Bude, is now available and can be downloaded here.

Bude’s clear Vision, supported by evidence gained from community consultation, will enable Bude to attract funding to deliver the projects and improvements that Bude’s community says it wants.

Why a Town Team?

There are many sources of funding available – from local and central government, including other bodies such as Arts Council, and National Lottery. In recent years, we have seen millions go to other Cornish Towns such as St Ives, Newquay, Camborne, for Town improvements, yet Bude has failed to attract any.  A key reason is that the funding pots are often made available with a short application window, which means, that towns without a project plan in an advanced enough state to put forward a feasible bid within the timescales required, will miss out.  For example, Bude has previously missed out on being awarded any Community Renewal Fund due to not having a coherent plan supported by community evidence.

Through consultation with Bude’s community and Businesses the Town Team has been able to build an evidence-based understanding of the needs of the Town. Bude’s Vision and Investment Plan has been driven by the aspirations of local people and recognition of the challenges Bude is facing looking ahead.

Bude’s vision will be realised from the sum of many projects, big and small, around the town centre. It will involve building partnerships and securing investment from a wide range of public and private stakeholders.
